You Are the Dreamer of Your Life
Join Katherine Skaggs, author of Artist Shaman Healer Sage, as she explores foundational shamanic principles for spiritual awakening, conscious creation, healing, and living in sacred relationship with life. Shamanism offers an ancient mapping system for the soul, teaching us to recognize Spirit within all things and to walk through life with greater awareness, personal power, grace, joy, and wisdom.
The Earth Walk is an opportunity for the soul to experience, learn, create, and evolve. From a shamanic perspective, the spiritual and physical worlds are intimately connected. What we experience within ourselves affects how we perceive and participate in the world around us. Understanding these spiritual principles helps us become more conscious participants in our own lives.
You Are the Dreamer of Your Reality
One of the foundational principles of shamanism is that you, the Soul, are the Dreamer of your reality. The physical world can be understood as a dream of Spirit, and each of us participates in the unfolding of that dream through consciousness, choice, intention, relationship, and action.
Much of life is created through patterns that operate outside our conscious awareness. At the same time, the soul carries intention and purpose into incarnation. The spiritual path gives us an opportunity to awaken within the dream and become increasingly aware of what we are creating and how we are participating in our experience.
Shamanic practice invites us to become lucid within the dream of life. As awareness grows, we gain greater capacity to choose consciously, respond differently, listen to our deeper wisdom, and bring our lives into greater harmony with the soul. We begin to recognize ourselves as active participants in Creation.
Everything Is Alive with Spirit
Within the shamanic worldview, everything is alive with the energy of Spirit. The Earth, animals, plants, mountains, waters, stones, ancestors, elements, and unseen realms participate within a living field of relationship.
Everything carries energy, vibration, and frequency.
The Q’ero people of the high Andes of Peru teach about the movement and quality of energy through the concepts of Sami and Hucha. Sami is refined, life-giving energy that supports harmony and well-being. Hucha is heavy energy created through human experience and can accumulate through fear, anger, resentment, jealousy, conflict, grief, and other unresolved emotional states.
Shamanic practices teach us how to release heavy energy and restore a more harmonious flow of life-giving energy. Learning to clear Hucha and receive Sami can become part of maintaining greater emotional, mental, physical, energetic, and spiritual balance.
These teachings also remind us that we are continually participating in an energetic exchange with life. Awareness gives us the ability to tend that relationship with greater consciousness.
All Is Well Beyond the Appearances of Things
Another important spiritual principle found within shamanic practice is:
“All is well, no matter the appearances of things.”
This teaching invites us into a larger perspective of the soul’s journey. Human life contains profound beauty alongside change, uncertainty, loss, conflict, and transformation. From within an immediate experience, our vision can become focused entirely upon what is happening in the moment.
Shamanic journeying and spiritual practice open awareness into what is traditionally called non-ordinary reality, where we can experience life from a broader spiritual perspective. From this expanded place of awareness, the events of our human lives can sometimes be understood within a much larger journey of learning, transformation, relationship, and soul evolution.
Humanity itself is walking this evolutionary path. Times of great cultural and collective change can bring buried patterns into visibility, asking individuals and communities to become more conscious of how we live, relate, create, and care for one another and the Earth.
Learning to journey inward and connect with spiritual awareness can bring greater understanding, grounding, peace, and perspective to our everyday lives.
You Are the Blessing
One of the most beautiful teachings I have received through my years of spiritual and shamanic practice is very simple:
You are the blessing.
Every person carries gifts, beauty, wisdom, and a unique expression of Spirit within them. For more than twenty-five years, I have experienced this directly through painting thousands of Soul Portraits and Spirit Guide paintings. When I look beyond personality and everyday identity into the deeper essence of a person, I continually encounter beauty.
The same awareness can be cultivated in our relationship with the natural world. When we slow down and truly look at a tree, an animal, a mountain, a river, a stone, or the night sky, we begin to remember the sacred presence woven throughout Creation.
Ceremony deepens this remembering. Sitting together in sacred space opens the heart and helps us recognize the Divine within one another as well as within ourselves. The more consciously we return to sacred relationship with life, the easier it becomes to recognize how deeply we bless one another simply through presence, kindness, awareness, creativity, love, and authentic connection.
This is part of the shamanic path: to awaken within the dream, remember the sacred nature of life, and consciously participate in the world we are creating.
May you be blessed as you explore these shamanic principles and discover how they may support your own Earth Walk.
